Assalamualaikum Dr. Abu,
Congratulations for introducing the spirit of Boal in your latest production. It was refreshing and ‘entertaining’. I hope you do not mind me sharing some thoughts about your production. My intention is to stimulate you, to provoke you, so that you will improve and progress in your future endeavours. Like what I have mentioned you that night, I was expecting you and your actors to solicit participaton from the audience. You mentioned that you did not dare do so, for fear that the audience are not ready yet, for that kind of theatre. You may be right, but I still believe that you should try. Nothing ventures nothing gain. Since you are so daring enough to present such a presentation, why not test the waters. You might be surprised. On the whole, you intention or message came through the performance, BUT it could have been more ‘polished’ if you had more time, I suppose. Some of your concepts were not clear or maybe wasn’t well articulated on stage. The ideas were good and creative, but the ‘implementation’ could be more crystalize and aesthetic. I like your ideas, cocepts, and bravery. (I think I share with you some common ‘feelings’ and ‘aspirations’. Looking forward to working with you and ASASINEMA.)
Back to your creative project, if you plan to stage it again, maybe you should look into these factors:
1. the pacing of the performance – sometimes it is a bit dragging and slow
2. it could be more compact and tighten-up – there are also redundancies, in terms of dialog and actions, and interactions. When things are repeated, you loose the ‘novelty’ effect
3. You might want to btraek the 4th. imaginary wall, as I suggested that night
4. the actor, narrator, coffee boy, and also a solo chorus, was a great idea. It coule have been more theatrical if you were to use stylised movements from Pencak Silat, or maybe from the Suzuki Method, as pioneered byTadashi Suzuki. I would also suggest you employ Bertolt Brecht’s concept of the “A-Effect”.
5. I could see that the actors are very creative, versatile and agile. They have the potentias to go much.much further. The Sultan can jump the ‘hurdles’ faster if given the correct (3X) instrument and training.
Many apologies if my ‘coffee’ is a bit bitter. But I think you can take it, Godwilling.
Once again, congrats and thank you for giving me an ‘experience’ that night. Wassalam and Selamat Berpuasa.
